JPG doesn’t support transparency the way PNG does, so converting a PNG with a see-through background forces a decision: something has to fill in that transparent area, since a JPG file can’t leave it empty. The Background Color setting is exactly that decision — white is the safe default for most images destined for a light-colored page or document, black works better for images headed somewhere dark, and Custom lets you match a specific brand or page background exactly instead of guessing.

This matters most for logos and graphics that were originally designed to sit on top of something else.
